How To Have A Successful Eye Exam

Posted on

Your eyes allow you to see the magnificent world around you. As such, you want to take excellent care of your eyes to preserve your vision for as long as possible. In addition to eating nutritious foods and wearing sunglasses outdoors, it is important to schedule an eye exam once a year.

Here are a few different ways to have a successful eye exam.

Bring a List of Your Medications

Just like your family physician, your eye doctor will want to know what medications you currently take. This is because certain medications can have negative effects on your eyes. For example, steroids can increase eye pressure, which can make you more susceptible to glaucoma.

Remember Your Glasses or Contacts

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you will want to bring them along to your next eye exam. Your eye doctor will look closely at your current prescription and determine if adjustments need to be made. If you are experiencing headaches or other symptoms from your eyewear, you should let your eye doctor know about it.

Find Out Your Family History of Eyes Disease

Like other health problems, eye diseases tend to run in families. If you do not know anything about your family's medical history, it is a good idea to ask your family members about their eye diseases. If you discover that you have a family history of macular degeneration, for example, your eye doctor may recommend frequent screenings for the eye disease.

Write Down Your Questions

If you have any questions about your eye health, do not be afraid to ask them at your next eye exam. For instance, if you are wondering how to combat dry eye or what you can do to improve your eye health, you should bring up these questions to your eye doctor.

Ask a Friend or Family Member to Come Along

During your eye exam, your eyes will be dilated, which can cause blurry vision temporarily. As a result, you might not be able to safely drive yourself home. Therefore, you should ask a friend or family member to accompany you to your eye appointment and drive you home.

If you follow these helpful tips, you will get the most out of your next eye appointment. If it has been more than a year since your last eye exam, you should give your eye doctor a call as soon as possible.
